Action Congress of Nigeria As the Water Day is celebrated the world over, the Rivers State Chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN says it’s regrettable that availability of drinking water in Rivers State still remains a mirage.

The ACN in a statement issued and signed by its publicity secretary, Jerry Needam to mark the World’s Water Day noted that not even the UNEP report that decried the alarming water situation in the state in terms of scarcity and contamination, particularly in the Ogoni axis has been able to sensitize the government and its concerned agencies to rise to the urgent need to save the people from the acute water scarcity and pollution which in some parts of the state has resulted to cholera epidemic.

The ACN spokesman, Jerry Needam therefore called on Governor Amaechi-led government to as a matter of public importance and, or exigency, declare a state of emergency in the water sector in the state.

This and many more, the ACN further stated, are the issues rather than the misplaced priority of solidarity visits to, and passing votes of confidence on Governor Chibuike Amaechi by those elected to guide him on the path of attending to the peoples needs.

The ACN described the actions of the sycophantic lawmakers as ‘dereliction’ of responsibility for a recourse to politics of praise-singing in the face of lack of drinking water in their constituencies.

The party’s mouthpiece, Jerry Needam likened the drum-beating for Governor Amaechi by these misguided National and State Assembly members to the same madness that characterized the late Sani Abacha regime in the 1990s.

Rather than waste such billions of naira in organizing solidarity visits, rallies, paid publications and votes of confidence that add no value to the lives of the people, the ACN advised that such huge amount should be used to provide drinking water in the state.

It also foresees a situation where other ethnic groups will buy the outdated idea of paying solidarity visits to Governor Amaechi to further help him abandon his many responsibilities all to the detriment of Rivers people.

“This arrant nonsense must stop and Amaechi must be told the bitter truth that he has failed especially in the water sector,” the ACN remarked.
