Rivers rerun: APC wins first 3 seats FeaturedWritten by EMMA OWHONDAH
Before the first ballots had been cast in the legislative re-run election in Rivers State scheduled for Saturday, December 10, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has won presumptive three seats. The seats won are the Rivers South East senatorial District, Tai/Eleme/Oyigbo Federal Constituency and the Tai State Constituency.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had late Friday affirmed its earlier decision that re-run elections will hold only in 12 Electoral Units in Tai local government, a position the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had opposed.
A recent Federal High Court position on the matter on Wednesday failed to rest PDP’s agitation.
The party had said that the FHC sitting in Port Harcourt had ordered INEC to conduct election in all the Units in Tai, an interpretation disputed by APC which insisted that the Judge had ruled that the re-run election should take place only in the units marked by INEC.
However, in a decision that rested the matter, INEC National Commissioner in-charge of South South Zone, Dr. Mustapha Lecky, late Friday confirmed that election will hold only in 12 units in Tai. The implication is that the results of the previous election which put APC in the lead stand confirmed. With the situation, APC’s trio of Hon. Matthew Dike(State House of Assembly), Dr. Barry Mpigi(Federal House of Representatives) and Sen. Magnus Ngei Abe(Senate) look as good as having been returned elected.
