Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has congratulated FC Ifeanyi Uba on their recent victory in the 2016 Federation Cup competition.
Governor Ikpeazu also congratulated the management and players of Enugu Rangers FC, Enugu for breaking 30 years jinx to win the Nigerian premier league.
Ikpeazu, who described both victories as “well-deserved”, emphasised that the victory of FC Ifeanyi Uba is a clear case that private sector support and partnership with government in sports development in Nigeria had the potential to uplift the round leather game in Nigeria and attract more investments.
Ikpeazu has therefore, called on wealthy citizens and companies to invest in the growth and development of sports.
The Governor commended the proprietor, players and the bench of FC Ifeanyi Uba for the feat and for demonstrating that the private ownership and management of football teams in Nigeria is the way to go in order to win laurels, create jobs and sustainably manage clubs, as practiced in Europe.
The Abia State Chief Executive said that as the state that hosts the most successful football club in Nigeria, Enyimba FC of Aba, the state appreciated the efforts that went into the successes of FC Ifeanyi and Enugu Rangers FC, respectively, saying the state government would learn from their experiences to “remodel the operations of our great football teams and reposition them to continue to win laurels and make football loving Abians and Nigerians proud.”
