Armed militia groups opposed to each other have overrun Abonnema, headquarters of Akuku Toru local government area in Rivers State, forcing workers of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, eligible voters, accredited journalists, and observers to remain indoors.
As of the time of this report, election materials had yet to be distributed to the Wards in the area as INEC officials still trapped at the Registration Area Centre, RAC.
Sources in Abonnema told The Neighbourhood that many people have suffered degrees of gunshot wounds with some critical. One of the sources told the newspaper that the wounded had yet to be moved to hospitals as it remained insecure to step out.
Security men have reportedly been despatched to the area to put the armed men in check.
Meamwhile in Unit 25, Ward 7 of Opobo/Nkoro local government, election was reportedly suspended by INEC officials who returned the materials meant for the Unit to the Commission’s office. According to a source in the area, the crisis was caused when a serving Commissioner in the admiistration of Governor Nyesom Wike repportedly made attempts to hijack materials meant for the unit. Voters, however, were said to have resistd him.
